Painting the town red

TCS Painting the town red

A closer look at the rooftop art celebrating the Phillies’ success.

As one of the most popular sports, baseball accumulates many passionate fans who come up with creative ways to support their teams. One such tribute in Philadelphia, to support the Phillies, could be seen from the tops of the cities’ roofs. To support the Phillies’ success, one roofing company created several pieces of art on their client’s roofs to celebrate their local team.

The creator of the concept and owner of ST Roofing, Scott Tisdale, and artist PJ Villot teamed up for Red October to support the Phillies. At the end of each roofing job, Scott and PJ created bird’s eye view murals on the top of the flat concrete roofs. "You have to stick out somewhere in Philly," Scott said to CBS News. "Philly needs some love so what better way to do it than this way?"

On Belgrade Street, PJ spent an hour and a half creating a mural of the Philadelphia skyline, the Phillies’ logo and the phrase “Dancing On My Own.” The phrase has become its own calling card for many of the fans. After a Phillies game against the Arizona Diamondbacks in the National League Championship Series, the speakers played Calum Scott’s “Dancing On My Own” celebrating the Phillies’ win. Fans continue to show their support by sharing their talents. "I have to look at the logo just to get the lettering right," PJ said. “But everything else, I freehanded."

PJ has also done a mural of the iconic Phillie Phanatic. The mascot’s signature bright green fur stands out among the other gray roofs and fans and community members alike have begun noticing these art installations. “We work really hard on a daily basis," PJ said. "It's actually a blessing that it's actually getting recognized, and people are actually seeing what we're doing." If Scott does work on a roof the art comes for free!

Last year, the Phillies were aiming to play in the 2023 World Series to follow their participation in the 2022 World Series. Unfortunately, they didn’t make it to the 2023 World Series but are ready for a comeback in 2024. The World Series is coming up this October and the Phillies are a strong contender. They are favored in the top three to win the World Series, along with the Dodgers and the Yankees. The Phillies are first in the NL East with over eighty wins!

ST Roofing has been repairing roofs for the last twenty years and about ten years ago Scott began putting his signature “ST” trademark on the top of his finished projects. Each tag started off as a simple “ST” in white spray paint but has slowly evolved into artistic expression. Now, each tag is unique with bright colors and beautiful swirls.
