The National Roofing Contractors Association (NRCA) and industry partners finalized their list of advocacy issues to present at the Capitol this April 18-19. Roofing Day in D.C. is an opportunity for roofing professionals to meet with members of Congress and their staff regarding important issues relevant to the industry. This is a crucial, annual opportunity for the industry to stand united with one voice.
This year’s priority issues include: workforce shortage solutions, funding for the Department of Energy’s Building Technologies Office and support for the Main Street Tax Certainty Act.
As an essential sector of the nation’s economy, accounting for over $100 billion and one million workers, the roofing industry finds it is vital that the government prioritize immigration reform, the Workforce Innovation and Opportunity Act, and increase funding for Career and Technical Education Perkins state grants as ways to boost the roofing industry nationwide and provide adequate support to those already in or considering joining the industry.
The roofing industry will advocate for funding to support of the Department of Energy’s (DOE) Building Technologies office to improving funding into issues such as building codes, market stimulation and other topics related to the industry that can lead to a great improvement in the field’s overall efficiency. This emphasis could lead to great changes in the industry for economic growth and an increase in job opportunities.
As a part of the Tax Cuts and Jobs Act of 2017, owners of partnerships, trusts, S corporations and sole proprietorships are able to deduct up to 20% of business income. This provision is set to sunset in 2025, unlike the provision for corporations which does not have a sunset date. The roofing industry will advocate for continued support for these deductions under the Main Street Tax Certainty Act, which would give businesses permanent ability to use this deduction. This act will allow businesses to thrive and grow, boosting the industry and the economy.
