Morris Habitat for Humanity, Blue Nail Roofing and GAF Roofing came together in June to provide a new roof for Kristina “Tina” Scorpo.
Tina is a maternity nurse who has been treating COVID-19 patients since the onset of the pandemic. Her husband, Francesco Scorpo, a Montville Police Officer lost his life to the coronavirus in April. He and Tina had two small children.
Morris Habitat for Humanity’s program, GAF Roofs for Heros, provides new roofs free of charge to essential workers like Tina.
“My father nominated me for the program, and I was the first in Morris County to be chosen,” she said in an interview done by Melissa Benno of Tap into Montville, an online news platform for Montville residents. “We had been getting ready to replace the roof this summer, but then my husband died.”
Blue Nail Roofing, a local business in Montville, New Jersey performed the work on Scorpo’s roof. Blue Nail owner John Hogan and his wife Nina were pregnant at the time of the June installation. Not long after the project, they had their baby under the care of Scorpo.
“She’s part of the team at St. Barnabas,” John Hogan said. “He’s our first child; we knew she was a nurse but then it was such a coincidence that she helped deliver our son.”
“It was the best kind of paying it forward,” Scorpo said.
Morris Habitat for Humanity is a non-profit organization that provides houses to families in need through volunteer labor and donations of money and materials. Their program, GAF Roofs for Heros, is a joint effort between Morris Habitat and Rebuilding Together North Jersey. Essential health workers and first responders who need roofing help are encouraged to apply. All roofing materials are supplied by GAF.
“The whole program could mean a lot for front line workers, especially someone deeply affected like me,” she said. “I am much appreciative to GAF, Habitat for Humanity, and John and Nina at Blue Nail. It’s kind of nice that a Montville business did the work on my roof.”
