Stefan Boyer is a strong believer in the potential of the residential metal roofing market. He and his brother Jonathan founded Metal Roofing HeadQuarters, a metal roofing sales and installation company operating in territories including Alabama, Mississippi, Tennessee, Georgia and the Florida Panhandle, just four short years ago.
Currently, the company is on pace for $7 million in sales this year with 90 percent of the business coming from the residential metal roofing sector. Metal Roofing HeadQuarters averages about 300 metal roofing projects per year with four full-time metal roofing crews and three salespeople.
In cooperation with the Metal Roofing Alliance (MRA), Metal Roofing HeadQuarters will be in the spotlight during an episode of “Today’s Homeowner,” a home improvement show airing nationally later this month. The company worked with celebrity TV host Danny Lipford to help install a new EDCO metal roof at a home in Mobile, Alabama, where the homeowners were looking to improve the curb appeal and better protect their home.
As an advocate for the metal roofing businesses, we asked Stefan to share his thoughts about how his company has grown, the opportunity for metal roofing and the keys to success:
Q: You’ve already achieved a great deal in just a few years. What are your goals for the future?
A: My goal is to build a company that my daughter and nephew would be proud to run someday. I also plan to do consulting work and help grow the metal roofing industry in a positive and honest way. We don't have goals of growing much larger, but we are always trying to improve what we are doing. We are true believers in metal roofing, and we see the metal shingle products as the future of neighborhood roofing. I hope I can be an ambassador for the industry for the rest of my life.
Q: Who are your mentors in the industry?
A: I have several people who I consider to be mentor or major influencers to me in this industry. My two uncles who I've worked for trained me and gave me over 10 years of valuable experience. I consider myself to be a disciple of Dave Yoho and have attended several of his programs, building a relationship with him that I value greatly. Within the metal roofing industry, there are two people who I look to the most for guidance. I've known Frank Farmer and Todd Miller since 2008, and I have a great appreciation for them both. Frank and Todd demonstrate an approach to this business that I admire and try to emulate. If I've ever needed anything, they've both been eager to help.
Q: Why do you feel it’s beneficial for companies like yours to be involved with trade organizations like the MRA?
A: The quick and easy answer is, organizations like the MRA help you grow your business and make more money. By being part of the organization, you have access to well qualified, inexpensive leads.
However, it's really the networking capabilities that bring the most long-term value. There are manufacturers and other experienced contractors who are eager to share their knowledge with you. As long as people are honestly wanting to do things the right way and willing to learn how, there are many experts at the MRA who are happy to help.
Successful trade groups like the MRA help to strengthen the industry's market share and protect its overall reputation. A stronger, healthier metal roofing industry benefits everyone involved. We are truly more powerful as a unified group than as a loose collection of individuals. Instead of having a bunch smaller, insignificant voices sending out mixed messages, the MRA provides a giant microphone that speaks from a credible 3rd party perspective, helping to spread the word about metal roofing's many virtues. Without our support, the MRA wouldn't exist, and without the MRA, our industry wouldn't be experiencing the growth we're all enjoying.
Plus, resources like the MRA's website, metalroofing.com, offer an abundance of valuable information and tools to help support your sales department.
