In a recent episode of Roofing Road Trips, host Megan Ellsworth sat down with Mishell Cox, co-owner of Cox Residential Construction Company and finalist in the Beacon Female Roofer of the Year contest.
Going into her company's history, Mishell explained the culture that they have worked hard to build, emphasizing the role of inclusion and diversity. "They are a must within our company. We have to make people feel like they are part of it," Mishell said. She considers her employees a part of a cohesive team, making it a point that, "You don't work for us, you work with us. "
Mishell's journey in the roofing industry began when she and her husband decided to take the leap to start their own business. “He didn't get paid everything he was owed, and he was for the most part doing the majority of the work and that's when we decided to open our own company,” she said. Mishell also believes in celebrating inclusion and the accomplishments of women-owned roofing enterprises as well saying, “This is a company that is owned by a woman who happens to be Latina.”
Discussing her experiences as a Beacon Female Roofer of the Year finalist, Mishell called it both exciting and humbling. The news of her being a finalist reached her during a manufacturer-sponsored trip, relayed by a peer in the industry. For Mishell, the recognition by her peers and the larger roofing community was a testament to the ethics and values they've upheld at Cox Residential and an inspiration to improve and become the best they can be.
Mishell voiced her passionate belief that women bring unique strengths to the table. "Women have so much to offer to the roofing industry," she said. She urges other women to look at the roofing industry as a viable and rewarding career path.
