When Jacob Aguirre got out of the military, he was looking to find his new “home.” He worked in the oilfields and worked in some other industries, but ultimately, he was drawn to the roofing industry. Jacob recounts his experiences with Beldon Roofing, and in the industry as a whole, on a new episode of Stories from the Roof.
When asked about some of the most valuable lessons he learned in roofing, Jacob responded, “do it right the first time.” Everyone says do it right the first time, do it right the first time, which I agree, do it right the first time,” says Jacob, “But in roofing, there's so many steps to where you conceal the first time, you conceal things that aren't seen in the final product. So I think one of our most valuable lessons that everything's discoverable at an essence of everything that you do layer by layer, everything is discoverable in what we do.”
It’s also so important in this industry to self-educate and to put the work into learning all about your field. Jacob says that he regrets not doing that earlier in his career. “As I've moved forward and I've grown a lot I turned to self-education, and all my leaders in our staff level, they preach self-education. So I think if I would've taken the self-education more in the early onset of my career, I probably would've been a step further too than some of the others.”
Roofing is an industry where you have to work tirelessly, and “no” should never be your answer to taking on new work. “For my career, I've always had the mindset I never say no,” Jacob explained, “What we bring to the table is everything about us, and when I got involved, they said, ‘Hey, let's travel. Let's go out of state. Let's go do this job.’ I was that type of person, and still am. Just say yes, and no matter what obstacles or logistics of things, we don't ever say no. If you say no, you turn your customer down, you let somebody down. I don't see an option to say no.”
