Metal Wall Panels Clad Contemporary Apartments on Former Naval Air Station

ATAS International contemporary apartments
October 9, 2022 at 12:00 p.m.

New apartment building in Massachusetts used metal panels from ATAS International for the building's exterior.

The Mastlight at Union Point, a LEED Silver Certified apartment building, contributed to the transformative redevelopment of the former South Weymouth Naval Air Station, in South Weymouth, Massachusetts. The area is now known as the vibrant mixed-use district of Union Point. The Mastlight development includes 265 apartments and 14,000 square feet of retail, consisting of two buildings, with a third building composed of 13 townhomes. Retail and restaurant space is at grade level, complementing this walkable community. The Mastlight is surrounded by acres of beautiful green space, woods, dog parks and foot trails. Boston is just a short drive or train ride away. Apartment amenities include a shared entertainment kitchen, courtyard fireplace, luxurious saltwater pool, fitness center and a sprawling roof deck with views of the South Shore’s natural surroundings.

As a LEED Silver Certified property, it scored the most points on several categories, including innovation in design and sustainable sites. In the sustainable sites category, development density, community connectivity, alternative transportation and public transportation access contributed several points. In the water efficiency category, points were gained with water efficient landscaping and water use reduction. In the materials and resources category, points were gained with construction waste management and regional materials.

Versa-Lok metal panels in two colors, Titanium and Classic Bronze, manufactured in .040 aluminum, were selected for this project. The Titanium panels were installed on the entry tower, and the Classic Bronze panels were installed between the windows and the brick sections. Versa-Lok is a flat shingle style wall panel, which creates classic rectangular shapes with its versatile mix-and-match sizes. It can be installed directionally right to left or left to right in a horizontal or vertical orientation. The panel utilizes concealed clips and fasteners to provide a metal shingle type application on a wall. The aesthetics of Versa-Lok can be enhanced by using factory fabricated Elite Series trims and accessories, including ATAS’ patented Z Boxes, which ensure a clean finished look for penetrations in a metal wall. Those penetrations could include light fixtures, exhaust vents, and electrical outlets. A variety of wall panel corner options are available, including mitered corners, which allow for visual enhancement and crips sight lines at areas of panel termination. All these products are manufactured by ATAS in a state-of-the-art facility to ensure the highest quality and most controlled environment possible.

Utile Architecture and Urban Design of Boston, Massachusetts designed this contemporary building, owned by JM Corcoran & Co., LLC. Plumb House Builders, Inc. of Milford, Massachusetts installed the metal wall panels through their exterior division, Dalton Builders. The panels were purchased through 84 Lumber in Holbrook, Massachusetts. The success of the project was truly a team effort. Jared Gorman, the ATAS Product Representative for that area, worked with the architect, installed the mockup and trained the installation team, along with help from the people at 84 Lumber.
