In season 6, episode 14 of Roofing Road Trips®, Heidi J. Ellsworth met with Scott Carpenter from Single Ply Roofing Institute (SPRI). Scott is the current president of SPRI and just celebrated his 40th year in the industry last year. When he’s not working with SPRI, Scott is the director of sales at Anchor Products. He explained, “We’re a company in Texas that does rooftop attachments. Basically, we install a mechanical attachment to hold things on a roof in the case of wind or seismic events.”
Having been involved with SPRI for years prior to becoming president, Scott is excited about their 2024 initiatives, which include a special project called DORA. He elaborated, “DORA is an acronym, Directory of Roof Assemblies, and it's another book on the shelf that a contractor, a consultant can grab.” This resource is a web-based service that contains listings, blogs and resource papers. Scott made it clear that this resource is powerful not just because of the physical benefits, such as multiple listings not available in RoofNav, but also because of the education opportunities that come with the included precision papers and study ups.
In addition to the big DORA initiative, SPRI is working on other exciting projects this year. One of these comes in the form of hiring Chadwick Collins as the institute’s first fully funded technical director. Scott elaborated on this, “It’s important that we're active at all the code bodies, so, we are blessed to have Chadwick present at all the code hearings and being an advocate for single ply.”
They also have another initiative called OMNI. This stands for on-boarding members nurturing involvement and is an initiative focused on building a stronger community. Scott explained, “It comes from my heart of walking into this organization, probably 25 years ago, and not really knowing anyone, being intimidated by all these wonderful minds.” For Scott, a huge part of his journey was having support from an existing member to guide him. This initiative is meant to provide that for all new members to SPRI, this year and beyond.
