Every contractor knows that moisture getting into the structure of your project is a nightmare. If you discover it while working, you have to find a way to air it out before moving forward, and even worse, if you miss it there can be long-term damage done to the building. In this episode of Roofing Road Trips®, Megan Ellsworth sat down with VaproShield’s Director of Mass Timber, Aaron Gould, to hear about how their innovative SlopeShield Self-Adhered membrane helps make moisture management easier for contractors.
SlopeShield SA is a roofing underlayment designed to be breathable, meaning water vapor is able to move through it but air and liquid are stopped. Aaron explained in a bit more detail, saying, “Really any wood product should have some permeability, some drying potential to it. And SlopeShield not only does that, but it also protects from bulk water infiltration and even resists the percussive effect of rain events like thunderstorms. And it helps to maintain the wood to be a good moisture content of less than 20%.” It can be installed in a variety of low- and steep-slope applications, from mass timber to concrete and more.
This incredible product was developed over six years of research and development. This might seem like a long time to come out with a membrane, but SlopeShield SA has many unique features that showcase why those years of work were crucial. Aaron explained what makes this product stand out on the market, saying, “It's very critical that substrates not only stay as dry as possible but be allowed to dry. And that really differentiates us from the competition. A lot of the industry grew out of Europe, and in Europe they used less durable and nearly impermeable membranes as far as moisture vapor is concerned, but they also didn't do as good a job of keeping water out.” SlopeShield SA has found the perfect balance between allowing vapor to escape and keeping additional water out, making it the go-to option for many manufacturers in industries like mass timber where moisture management is critical to success.
