Mastering aluminum panel systems

American Metalcraft Mastering Aluminum Wall Panel Systems
March 6, 2024 at 6:00 p.m.

By Jonny Suchor.

This comprehensive guide helps contractors find optimal aluminum panel wall systems for their projects.

Selecting the ideal aluminum panel wall system for a building involves both aesthetic preferences and practical considerations to ensure cost-efficiency, visual appeal, structural integrity and environmental sustainability. There are many variables to consider when specifying solid aluminum plate panels and American Metalcraft has provided a guide to help you make the correct decisions.

Rainscreen versus wet seal systems

The choice between rainscreen systems and traditional wet seal systems is important. Rainscreens, which are not the primary weather barrier, limit water infiltration. Wet seal systems have proven reliable over decades, sealing joints becoming the primary weather barrier and preventing weather penetration.

Metal panel specifications

The thickness, depth and stiffener use of the metal panels are determined by the building's engineering needs, including wind load and deflection criteria.

Solid aluminum plate systems

For a robust exterior wall solution, solid aluminum plate systems are recommended. They excel in strength-to-weight ratio, are fully recyclable, NFPA 285 compliant, non-combustible and non-sparking, offering top-tier long-term performance.

Economical material usage

Efficient design incorporates standard sheet metal widths and lengths. Custom widths and lengths are also available, tailored to the project’s size and the panel fabricator’s capabilities. Designing panels to maximize these standard sizes can lead to significant savings.

Sub-girts and attachment systems

Direct attachment of the panel system to the stud wall framing is essential. The right sub-girt works seamlessly with the insulation, whether it’s inside or outside the stud wall.

Coating systems

Polyvinylidene fluoride (PVDF) coatings offer durability and a range of aesthetic options. Given current market fluctuations, coordination with manufacturers on available colors and coatings is crucial, especially if supply chain issues arise.

Installation considerations

Proper installation is very important. Given the potential for on-site damage, selecting a manufacturer that can provide swift, efficient replacements is essential.

For the forward-thinking contractor, it’s just the beginning of the aluminum panel wall systems. Armed with knowledge about rainscreens, wet seal systems and the economic use of materials, now is the time to act.
