Malarkey Envirogen™ Shingles Created for Limited Impact on the Environment – Part 2

Envirogen™ is a family of Malarkey Roofing Products® specially designed, manufactured and certified for sustainability.

We continue the series of how Malarkey Roofing Products reduces its impact on the environment and manufactures products with a sustainability focus for superior performance, reliability, and limited impact on the environment.

Cool Roofing Granules

Cool Roofing Granules reflect solar ultraviolet (UV) rays, the infrared portion of sunlight. This enables the colors of the shingle to be seen by the eye, while still allowing the roof to stay cool.

Roofs with these reflective granules can also keep the building cool, and may reduce energy use to control air-conditioning. Cool roofs can also aid in reducing the heat island effect in developed, urban areas.

Malarkey products with Cool Roofing Granules include:

  • RCap™ Line: As part of a roof system, solar reflective cap sheets may help decrease building energy costs and extend roof service life.
  • Ecoasis™ Costa with Nexgen™ polymer modified asphalt: Ecoasis™ Costa is an architectural shingle featuring solar reflective granules similar to standard shingle colors and fortified with sustainable Nexgen™ asphalt.

Malarkey’s products with Cool Roofing Granules have measured radiative property values listed with the Cool Roof Rating Council and can be used to comply with California Energy Code Title 24, Part 6 Cool Roof Requirements.

Algae Defense™ Systems

Malarkey also utilizes specialized granules that perform beyond traditional materials to offer benefits to the homeowner and the environment.

Streak Resist™ Technology

Algae growth on a roof can cause black streaks which can alter the color of your roof and make it appear aged. Algae Defense™ Systems incorporate Streak Resist™ Technology, a blend of algae resistant copper granules that help maintain the aesthetic appearance of your roof by resisting black streaks caused by algae and may reduce the need to clean your roof.

Scotchgard™ Protector from 3M™

Also available to protect homes from unwanted algae growth are Malarkey shingles featuring Scotchgard™ Protector from 3M™. These shingles feature 3M™ Copper Roofing Granules, developed to resist the growth of algae and prevent black streaks from forming on roofs in climates with especially high humidity. In 1994, Malarkey Roofing Products® became the first manufacturer to offer Scotchgard™ Protector in a shingle.

Durable Roofing Shingles Avoid Landfills

Malarkey Roofing Products® manufactures performance-driven shingles that withstand extreme weather conditions with an extended service life on the roof.

Both Flexor™ and Nexgen™ polymer modified asphalts offer exceptional flexibility. This flexibility, plus the use of SEBS seal-down adhesive, prevents shingle blowoff, making the shingle more durable and less likely to create waste. As compared to traditional oxidized asphalt, Flexor™ and Nexgen™ products provide a longer life cycle.

Other attributes, such as impact resistance, allow shingles to withstand hail damage, lessening the impact of tear-offs and waste. Shingles featuring Copper Roofing Granules prevent algae growth which can also limit the life of the shingle.

Perhaps the most sustainable Malarkey innovation at present is the Nexgen™ polymer modified asphalt made at all manufacturing facilities. Nexgen™ is made from repurposed materials and being produced with a repurposed energy source via the methane recovery pipeline in the Portland, OR facility (see the Governor’s Achievement Award on back cover for details).

Asphalt Shingles are Recyclable

At the end of their useful life, asphalt shingles can avoid landfills and be recycled in most major metro areas. The shingles are ground up and used widely in paving applications. To learn more about how asphalt shingles are recycled, visit the Asphalt Roofing Manufacturers Association website.
