Local Community Comes Together to Provide New Roof for Family Battling Cancer

Beacon Family Battling Cancer
May 31, 2023 at 12:00 p.m.

By Cayden Wemple.

When the mother-daughter duo of Danielle and Isla Dorsey were faced with the challenge of getting a new roof, their community came through for them.

The last thing that Danielle and Isla Dorsey, a mother-daughter duo dealing with an intense battle with cancer, needed was another obstacle. Unfortunately, their roof was in dire need of repairs, but with the help of a team of firefighters and other local companies who donated their resources, the obstacle was overcome in a mere matter of weeks.

When Danielle’s daughter Isla was diagnosed in May of 2022 with rhabdomyosarcoma, the mother and daughter had to spend weeks upon weeks at the hospital. It's hard to notice the state of your living conditions when you’re never at home. "This would be devastating news to anyone, let alone a single mom going through what we are going through," Danielle wrote on social media.

"Last month, a neighbor knocked on the door to ask me if I knew my roof was coming off," Danielle told Patch. "I didn't realize the extent of it until I had someone come out and look at it."

When the nonprofit project Fire Buddies caught wind of the Dorsey’s story, they rushed to the rescue, and set a plan in motion to coordinate materials and labor from Beacon Building Products for the roof replacement. Then, during Isla’s longest stretch of time being away from the hospital, the project was completed.

"To say I cried when I heard all of this is an understatement," Danielle shared on social media. "The amount of relief I felt, and feel, not having to worry about something like putting a new roof on my house right now is incredible."

"Project Fire Buddies has been by our sides through the good and bad days, when we need them and when we just want to celebrate the good days," Danielle said. "I can't begin to tell you all how much these people mean to us, we have some of the most wonderful friends for the rest of our lives in these special people. We are so blessed in these trying times and we owe it all to so many people and organizations."
