In Season 3, Episode 42 of Roofing Road Trips, Heidi J. Ellsworth visits with Tom Biller of Tremco Roofing about how employee and contractor retention factor into the labor shortage. The two discuss the overall importance of strong onboarding training for employees, and talk about the ongoing training Tremco provides for contractors, sales representatives, the design community and more with regards to roofing products, systems and installation.
Tom is the training manager for Tremco Roofing’s building maintenance division. He is a strong believer that Tremco’s ongoing training and onboarding is a huge component of Tremco’s success. “We certainly feel that when you properly train an employee, they feel confident, they feel empowered to do their job and they want to learn more,” says Tom. “Training people properly to do their jobs, training people to advance in the company, really is key to retaining good people.”
You get great employees by training them properly and often. If you want to provide opportunities for someone to continuously advance it means that you have to continually train them on new skills as part of setting them up for success. This is a testament to the ways that Tremco invests in their employees.
“People worry "What if we train somebody and they leave the company?” says Tom. “Well, the flip side of that is what if you don't train them and they stay?”
Training is a huge part of how Tremco ensures that they have a profitable, effective and efficient labor force working on the rooftop. This above and beyond level of labor is cultivated through hands-on training that has been designed with contractor success in mind.
“That's a big part of what we do here in our training department,” says Tom. “We believe that an effective employee is a well-trained employee, one that believes and participates in continuing education.”
