When selling metal roofing there can be a lot of questions and more often than not, confusion from homeowners. Here are 7 myths that can easily be busted to help close the deal. Metal roofing is one of the best ways to Elevate Your Products and help homeowners get the roof of a lifetime! Share these with your customers by phone remotely, online and through your social media channels.
Myth #1: Metal roofs are so yesterday
Not so! In fact, metal roofs are seeing record sales. Not only are they energy efficient, withstand the elements and look great but they last. Many think of metal roofs as old but that is only because they provide extraordinary performance that lasts for decades so of course they are around for quite a while.
Myth #2: Metal roofs are plain
Not so! In fact, companies like Sherwin Williams are Color Obsessed. According to their website, “Every color has its story. At Sherwin-Williams, we help you tell that story. We decode each inspiration and experience with obsessive precision. Our color experts collaborate to create any color imaginable, bringing architectural design vision beautifully to life.”
Myth #3: Metal roofs are noisy
Not so! In days of old, insulation was usually not a part of roofing systems. Today, metal roofing utilize full roofing systems that include leading insulation systems to not only deliver blessed silence but also energy savings.
Myth #4: Metal roofs are heavy
Not so! Actually, metal is one of the lightest-weight roofing materials out there. It depends on the metal you choose, but aluminum is the most lightweight, clocking in at around 50 pounds per square. Contrast this to shingles, which can weigh anywhere from 200 pounds per square for basic shingles to 500 pounds per square for higher-end shingles.
Myth #5: Metal roofs are hotter in the summer and will increase my energy costs
Not so! Sherwin-Williams coating technologies are available with solar reflective pigments, that are referred to as Cool Coatings enabling cool metal roofing. They offer high reflectivity and high thermal emittance which means that they deflect (or emit) the heat energy that strikes them almost instantaneously, rather than absorbing it and releasing that energy over time. A substance with high emissivity is hot to the touch because it takes all the heat that strikes reflects it back out. Reflectivity and thermal emittance work together to lower utility costs because less of the sun’s energy gets absorbed into the roof system, attic area and living/office space below.
Myth #6: Metal roofs are prone to rust and leaks
Not so! That was part of the old metal roofing panels. Today, metal roofing is protected by not only strong, durable paint but it is also manufactured in a way to resist rust. With high-tech coatings on the metal, your roof will resist rust and continue to look great for years to come. There are also products like Geocel 4350™ that provide a strong, long lasting bond to PVDF, SMP, and polyester coated steel, bare galvanized, Galvalume® metal panels, aluminum, copper, skylights, glass, brick, block, wood and vinyl siding. The sealant stays flexible and can be applied in extreme wet or dry conditions, even down to 0 degrees F protecting any exposed areas on a metal roof.
Myth #7: There is no way I could ever afford a metal roof
Not so! First, the return on investment with metal roofing is amazing. According to the Metal Roofing Alliance, “Homeowners who renovate their home with metal roofing are typically able to recoup an extremely high rate of the roof’s cost, 85.9% according to national averages, with homes in the Eastern states recouping up to 95.5%! Homes with a metal roof see, on average, up to 6% resale value gain over homes roofed with asphalt. In some states, like Texas, a metal roof can even lower your homeowner's insurance by up to 35%.
And when you compare metal roofing to other roofing products it is obvious that the long-term cost finds that metal is the real value. When selecting a roofing material there are many factors to take into consideration beyond installation cost. Review a side-by-side comparison of metal roofs and other common roofing materials on the Metal Roofing Alliance website, www.metalroofing.com. While the initial investment of a metal roof may be higher, the value it offers over a lifetime is substantial.
