Hurricane Ian Was no Match For This Roof

Tremco Hurricane Ian 8.3
August 4, 2023 at 6:00 a.m.

By Evelyn Witterholt.

After getting hit hard by Hurricane Ian, this Tremco roofing system stayed put.

Last year, Florida experienced devastating impacts from Hurricane Ian. One place that was severely affected was Sanibel Island, which experienced the category 4 hurricane, including wind speeds of over 150 mph. But two roofs, which were equipped with roofing systems from Tremco, faced virtually no damage from the storm.

After the hurricane hit, Tremco sent some of its representatives to check on the roofs installed in the Sanibel area. Seth Schmenk, a field advisor for Tremco, told us that the two facilities they represented in that area were unscathed by the hurricane. One roof system had a POWERply® Endure® MB roof system  and the other building had their AlphaGuard™ BIO Plus liquid applied system.

“I think between the two buildings, the extent of the damage was a lost walkway pad on one of the condo buildings. Everything else held pretty tight,” Seth told us.

When looking at other roofs on the island, Seth said that many of them were not in great shape. He largely attributes the strength of Tremco’s roof to the quality of their products and (can we say contractor workmanship?  It’d be nice to give them a shoutout) workmanship during installation. Tremco is on site for the entirety of roofing projects that are installing their systems, making sure that their roofs are being installed correctly.

“Tremco not only takes pride in the products that we make, but the oversight of the projects as well,” Seth said. “So for those particular projects, Tremco was out on site for the entirety of the projects, overseeing the installation, making sure that the local contractors and crews were putting down the products correctly and at the right coverage rates.”

When a hurricane hits, the damage can be devastating. But when the roof on a building stays put, this can bring a great sense of relief to building owners. Seth says that Tremco does whatever they can to ensure that their roofs stay put, giving their customers peace of mind.

“We're making sure, especially here in southwest Florida, that when the inevitable happens of these hurricanes and large high wind events, that the damage is minimal,” he said. “A lot of people lose a lot when these events do come through, but it's really rewarding for me and for my team down here in southwest Florida to see that the work that we're doing is helping others.”
