By Evelyn Witterholt, RCS Reporter.

Strategically planning your company’s future is one thing, but here’s how to actually stick to the plan.

Writing out a yearly plan for the future of your roofing company can do wonders to improve your business, but there’s more you could be doing to stick to your goals. While you should have a plan for what you want to achieve in the year ahead, you need to be thinking about both the big and small picture. Danny Kerr, founder of Breakthrough Academy, spoke about the best ways to strategically set goals for your company and how to maintain them in this podcast.

For years, Breakthrough Academy has been working with contractors to help them grow their business in a variety of ways. One of the foundational elements of expanding a business is by strategically planning at the start of the year, but there’s work to do before this. Danny says that you want to think about the big picture goals for your company before planning for the next year.

“You need to have a very clear understanding of what your company core values are,” Danny says. “Every decision you make around your strategic plan will be around the core values of your company. And if they're not defined, it's easy to get distracted on what you should make a priority and what you shouldn't.”

Starting with a five-year plan can give your company a larger mission to work towards and get excited for. Once you do this, you can set goals for the year ahead. In order to meet these goals though, you have to make a habit of going back to them and working on them. Danny suggests taking 5-10 hours every week to return to your plan and see if you are meeting your own expectations.

Danny also says that you want to get really specific when making your plan. “I always encourage people to set real, tangible goals,” he says. “What are the numbers? What do you want to hit in revenue? What's the gross profit margin you want to achieve? What quality rating do you want to have by the end of the year? What are the quality, volume, and profit metrics that you want to hit?” All great questions to ask yourself when creating a company plan!
