How to bridge communication gaps in roofing companies

Glo How to bridge communication gaps in roofing companies
November 14, 2024 at 9:00 a.m.

By Jesse Sanchez.

Helping roofing companies break down internal silos through improved communication, boosting efficiency and morale.

In the recent episode of Roofing Road Trips®, host Heidi J. Ellsworth discusses the challenges of bridging departmental communication gaps with Melissa Chapman and Monica Vornbrock, co-founders of The GLO Group. Their organization, specializing in brand engagement and organizational health, has been instrumental in aligning teams and improving workplace culture in the roofing world.

A significant part of the conversation focuses on the common “silos” that emerge within organizations. Silos — barriers between departments or teams that lead to poor communication — are a major cause of operational inefficiencies, according to Melissa and Monica. "Silos can come from multiple directions,” explains Monica. “You can have technological gaps, generational gaps, cultural gaps, internal miscommunication.” She highlights that even teams working side by side may struggle with collaboration, each following different processes that rarely intersect efficiently.

Melissa elaborates on how these silos often lead to “finger-pointing” and frustration among employees. "What we're finding is that when we bring everybody together and everyone has a chance to understand how to be more effective in their communication,” she shares, adding that aligning communication styles can help teams focus on solutions rather than placing blame.

The GLO Group’s approach to breaking down these silos includes in-person workshops and real-life team development activities, allowing employees to engage in open discussions about their roles and challenges. This method has yielded immediate benefits. Melissa notes when discussing ways to reduce redundancies and frustrations, “Once that awareness comes forward, then there are tools that can be created or developed.”
