In the ever-evolving roofing industry, technical skills and business acumen alone aren’t always enough to guarantee success. Leadership development, team collaboration and personal growth are critical to achieving long-term success. That’s where individual coaching comes into play. In this episode of Roofing Road Trips®, Karen Edwards sat down with Melissa Chapman and Monica Vornbrock, co-founders of The GLO Group, to discuss how coaching can help roofing professionals unlock their full potential.
According to Melissa, coaching is fundamentally different from consulting. While consultants provide direct solutions and recommendations, coaching is a more collaborative process. “The role of a coach is really to serve as a partner to help the coachee accomplish any goals that they have set,” Melissa explained. “We don’t really lead the client as to where they’re going. They lead and we help them uncover some things that will help them reach their goals.”
One of the key benefits of coaching is the measurable return on investment. Research has shown that leadership and individual coaching lead to significant improvements in performance. “There have been multiple studies that show that from just individual coaching, 70% of those that participate have an increase in individual performance,” Melissa shared. “That means goal attainment, clear communication and higher satisfaction.”
For business owners and team leaders in roofing, coaching can be a game changer in addressing workplace challenges. Whether it's overcoming communication barriers, resolving conflicts or improving team alignment, coaching provides tailored support. Monica pointed out that coaching is particularly beneficial for employees on the brink of leadership roles. “There are always a couple of people on your team that you look at and think, ‘Hey, this person can be further developed. They’re great at what they do, but they’re not ready to be leaders yet. How do we get them there?’” she said. “That’s a great opportunity for getting individual coaching.”
Another compelling argument for coaching is its direct impact on employee retention and business profitability. Melissa cited a study that tracked a Fortune 500 company’s investment in coaching and its financial benefits. “The research concluded that coaching produced a 529% ROI immediately. After factoring in financial gains and employee retention, the overall ROI boosted to 788%,” she revealed. Given the high costs associated with employee turnover and onboarding, investing in coaching can lead to significant savings and efficiency gains.
For those in the roofing industry who may be struggling with internal misalignment or looking to develop strong leaders within their teams, coaching could be the missing piece. By fostering self-awareness, improving leadership skills and building a strong company culture, coaching helps individuals and businesses thrive.
