Heartland Roofing & Construction installs roof on new home for injured veteran

Heartland Roofing and the Nine Line Foundation partnered with A Soldier’s Journey Home to build the new home.

San Antonio, Texas-based Heartland Roofing & Construction teamed up with the Nine Line Foundation, a non-profit organization that is dedicated to meeting the financial and specialized needs of severely injured soldiers and their families, to donate materials and labor toward the current project: to build a completely accessible home for disabled veteran Eric Morante.

On April 20, 2007, SGT Eric Morante’s squad was guarding a strategic bridge in Iraq, when a suicide bomber detonated a truck with over 3,000 pounds of explosives beneath their feet. SGT Morante’s right leg was amputated above the knee, his wrist was shattered, several bones in his face were broken and teeth broken, and he suffered a severe traumatic brain injury (TBI). After returning home, SGT Morante, like many before him, realized that his life would be changed forever by his injury and loss of limb. And, like many before him, he would find support from Nine Line Foundation.

Truly believing that "No Man Left Behind Does Not End on the Battlefield", Nine Line Foundation was established in 2013 by Army Captain Tyler Merritt, to provide aid to our nation’s most severely combat wounded veterans. Since its founding, this all-volunteer, 100% nonprofit organization has provided support to seven wounded veterans, with SGT Eric Morante being the eighth. The Foundation has purchased temperature regulating beds, helped build four handicap accessible homes, assisted in paying for the training and placement of a PTSD trained service dog, and provided a self-sustaining aquaponics / hydroponics system, in addition to special projects specific to each veteran. SGT Morante’s home will be the fifth handicap accessible home built by the Foundation, with modifications dictated by his injury and special needs.

Nine Line Foundation partnered with A Soldier’s Journey Home, Inc., for Eric’s build.  A Soldier’s Journey Home, like Nine Line Foundation, is an all-volunteer non-profit organization, most of whose members are firefighters, who scheduled their vacation time to travel from across the country for the build.  The main building contingent arrived on Thursday, February 22, in New Braunfels, Texas.  This location is critical due to its proximity to San Antonio Military Medical Center, where SGT Morante frequently travels for ongoing treatment and prosthetics adjustments.
