Healthy Employees are More Productive

NRCA Healthy Employees
December 25, 2022 at 6:00 p.m.

By Alec Doniger.

The NRCA Health Care Program ensures that roofing employees are happy, healthy and able to do excellent work.

In Season 6, Episode 62 of Roofing Road Trips, Heidi J. Ellsworth talks with Cheryl Ambrose and Ted Ryan about health care plans for roofing contractors. Ted Ryan, Executive Vice President at Vault Health Strategies, shares with Heidi the benefits that his company’s partnership with the National Roofing Contractors Association (NRCA) awards contractor employees. Cheryl Ambrose, Director of Enterprise Risk Management at the NRCA, explains how employees who have access to quality health care help their companies reduce risk.

When asked what condition NRCA partner companies are in as it relates to health care, Cheryl explains that costs are rising and that employees are often confused about what options are available to them. This NRCA/Vault partnership is intended to curb this confusion.

COVID caused about a 10% increase in insurance premiums for roofing contractors. For this reason, Ted advises that companies change their methodology for giving their employees access to healthcare post-pandemic. “There are quite a few new players to the marketplace,” says Ted. “I think that if employers are looking to combat what is anticipated in terms of increases, they really need to contact program[s], [and] make sure that they're going through all of their available options.”

Together, NRCA and Vault are working to uncover some of these options for NRCA members. They believe everyone should have access to healthcare and that the process of attaining it should be as uncomplicated as possible. “[We] are always looking for ways to try to find something that will, in terms of offerings, help either meet a gap that might exist or bring something completely brand new to that member.”

One story about a Colorado contractor exemplifies this process perfectly. When it came time for this company to renew their insurance, they were looking at an 89% increase in plan coverage. Together, the NRCA and Vault worked to enroll this company in full medical coverage for $60,000 less than originally anticipated. This partnership is saving contractors tens of thousands of dollars. This one story shows how much of an impact the NRCA Health Care Program is making for both employees and employers.
