As a millennial business owner in the construction industry, helping the next generation of managers develop and grow their skill sets is something I'm deeply passionate about. I believe it’s essential to create a dynamic environment where learning and development are baked into the culture of the company. After all, the future of our business and industry depends on their growth.
First off, I believe in mentorship over management. Instead of just telling people what to do, I focus on guiding them. I want my team to feel empowered to make decisions, to learn through trial and error and to grow their confidence. It’s important to create a safe space where they know that making mistakes isn’t the end of the world, but rather an opportunity to learn and improve. This hands-on approach ensures they’re not just taking orders but actually understanding the "why" behind the decisions.
Another critical element is cross-training. I’ve found that exposing emerging leaders to different aspects of the business gives them a more holistic view. With having such a small team, we are in constant communication with each other which makes cross-training a little bit easier. Whether it’s getting them on-site to understand project management or having them sit in on client meetings to grasp the nuances of customer service, I want them to see how all the pieces fit together. The construction industry, especially in the realm of sustainability, is evolving rapidly, so it's crucial for new managers and team members to understand that learning never stops. Being well-rounded helps them become more adaptable and better problem-solvers.
When it comes to continuing education, I’m a huge advocate for training programs offered by the National Roofing Contractors Association (NRCA). The NRCA provides an incredible range of resources, from technical courses on the latest roofing technologies to leadership and safety certifications. I encourage my team to take full advantage of these programs because they’re designed to keep us all sharp and ahead of the curve. Whether it’s through their online learning platform, Roofing 101 courses or hands-on workshops, NRCA certifications are a critical part of professional development in our company. Investing in these kinds of resources not only strengthens individual skill sets but also ensures we’re meeting the highest industry standards, especially as we prioritize sustainable building practices.
Finally, I aim to lead by example. I work hard to embody the qualities I want to see in my team: resilience, empathy, innovation and a willingness to push boundaries. I’m transparent about my own journey and share both successes and challenges. If they can see me navigating through obstacles with integrity, they’re more likely to adopt those same values.
In short, I’m all about empowering the next generation to be proactive, adaptable and well-rounded, ensuring they’re prepared not just for where the industry is today, but where it’s going.
