Every year, Horch Roofing partners with a local charity, cause, or organization to give back to their community in Maine. Horch Roofing’s Responsible Giving Committee and fellow employees select the organization on the basis of the current hardships Maine’s citizens are facing.
The coronavirus has recently put food scarcity in the spotlight as more people across the United States become food insecure. This is due to either losing their job(s) from the economic crisis or quitting them to support their kids who are learning at home. For these reasons, Horch Roofing chose to support Good Shepherd Food Bank and work towards ending hunger in Maine.
The Good Shepherd Food Bank started when JoAnn and Ray Pike noticed the amount of wasted local food. They were inspired after reading an article about a food bank in Kansas City that solicited food from the food industry and shared it with those in need. Fast forward 39 years and now the Good Shepherd Food Bank has become a staple resource for people in Maine experiencing food insecurity and hunger, providing meals for over 71,000 Mainers who would have otherwise gone hungry.
Their story caught the eye of Horch Roofing, a company committed to giving back to their Maine communities since 2003. In an interview conducted by VillageSoup, company President Peter Horch said he and his employees believe “strongly in working with local organizations.” With the need to end hunger growing daily, especially as the economic and health effects of COVID-19 continue to persist, there was no better time to give. Peter Horch and fellow employees of Horch Roofing agreed that, “with its reach across the state, [Good Shepherd] was the best way to get food to where it is needed the most.”
To incentivize their partnership, Horch Roofing is donating $200 to the Good Shepherd Food Bank for every signed residential roofing contract in June and July. Their goal is to raise a minimum of $10,000 for food assistance, which is no small feat. A dollar can buy four meals, so for every $200 donation, up to 800 meals can be purchased. A child experiencing food insecurity can be sustained for more than two months and seniors experiencing hunger can be provided with the necessary nutrients and dietary staples for about the same time with that $200 donation.
