Troy Operations Manager from Cougar Paws highlights the critical aspects of maintaining their renowned roofing boots, specifically focusing on replacing the pads and understanding when it’s time to do so.
He explains, "There are three main factors that wear out your pad: one is the heat of the roof, the second one is how steep the roof is and the third one is your weight. All three of those have a great impact as to how fast your pad wears out." (If you wear out the pads sooner than expected, you have completed the job quicker.)
Troy stresses the importance of timely pad replacement to prevent damage to the boots. "You do not want to wear your pad down below or into this flex zone because that will damage your boot," he advises, indicating the 'flex zone' as where the foot naturally bends. Proper care ensures the longevity of the boots and maintains their durability. Most people wear down one area of the pad first. For some it is the toe, for others the heel or outside. The lowest point on the pad should be your guide to deciding when to replace the pad. If one area wears down too far it will blunt the Velcro hook on the bottom of the boot. Your pad will no longer adhere tightly on the boot, especially when on steep roofs. This will cause your pad to release and roll off the boot. Additionally, using Cougar Covers extends the life of the pad and protects the boot as well.
He showcases what a worn-out pad looks like and the consequences of delaying its replacement. He suggests that having an extra set of pads is beneficial for users to avoid wearing them past the boot's lip, which results in irreparable damage. "This is too much wear; this will cause damage to your boot," Troy points out.
Troy also touches on the importance of new pads fitting correctly to the boot. The first thing to check is the bottom of your boot. If you see that the Velcro hook is blunted or worn smooth in any area, they are not safe to wear. It is time to replace your boot.
"Make sure that the pad is adhering to the bottom of the boot; that it's sticking very well," he emphasizes. This is crucial as, with proper adhesion, the effectiveness of the Cougar Paws can be maintained.
Troy urges customers to closely monitor their Cougar Paws' wear and tear and maintain them properly. This insight highlights Cougar Paws' commitment to selling a product that is long-term effective and functional for roofing professionals.
