Equipping an expanding market

Equipping an expanding market

Malco Tools is meeting the hand tool needs of professionals as the metal market grows.

The metal industry is constantly changing and growing as new innovations and knowledge come out. A great example of this is the number of different material options in the industry today! 10 or 15 years ago, a standing seam roof was just a standing seam roof. But today, there are multitudes of standing seam roofs, whether the difference is how the panels attach (snap lock, seamed, nail strip, etc.) or what the panel itself is made of. In this MetalTalk™ episode, Karen Edwards sat down with Shane Norman of Malco Tools to talk about the different materials in the metal industry.

Shane, who is Malco’s senior product manager and oversees all of their RSG-focused tools, shared a little more about the variety available in the metal industry, saying, “I honestly think that the variety of metal is what's leading to the industry’s growth. You have all these metal manufacturers that are creating more aesthetically pleasing panels, so you start seeing more and more metal roofs being installed into residential over asphalt and then just using metal in general areas where you might not have seen it before.”

Where metal roofing might have been traditionally used in commercial spaces and on work buildings, it is now becoming more common in residential spaces as well. Shane explained, “We're starting to see more companies that used to only do asphalt roofs being requested by residential customers to either one, put an entire metal roof onto their building or they might want an accent piece. So, it is very common nowadays to see a roof that's 95% asphalt, but then you might have a decorative porch or a dormer or even a curb feature somewhere on the roof that's now made out of metal.”

Quickly adapting to this market shift and learning to work with metal can be challenging for installers and contractors in the field. Luckily, Malco Tools has everything they need to get started. Shane shared, “We really pride ourselves in looking at all of the jobs to be done on a work site, whether it's residential or commercial and focusing on where we can add efficiency... We really do have you covered, as far as hand tools go, if you're starting to look to get into the business.”
