Ever wonder what the committees of the Florida Roofing & Sheet Metal Contractors Association are working on?

Advisory Committee – (This committee is made up of FRSA Past Presidents.) The committee heard a brief financial report and a review of the 2018 Convention, along with plans for 2019.  FRSA’s 100th Anniversary plans were reviewed, and discussion on involving FRSA’s Young Professionals Council in other committees, possibly through the development of a mentor program.

Affiliate Council – The committee discussed ways to develop tools for use with media, newspapers, consumers and building departments. They reviewed the need for each Affiliate to create or update brochure material for promoting their Affiliates, and once complete, for FRSA to assist in distributing.

Building Committee – The committee received a staff report on the search for a new FRSA location since their last meeting, and then heard a presentation on property recommended by the Executive Committee for their consideration. After reviewing the property and asking several questions, the committee also recommended moving forward with purchase of the property once final questions were answered by the seller, subject to Board of Directors approval.

Codes & Regulatory Compliance Committee – The committee reviewed proposed code modifications drafted by the Codes Subcommittee for submittal to the Florida Building Commission for consideration in the 2020 code. Two important topics discussed were the possible inclusion of ASCE 7-16 in the 2020 code and the roof diaphragm cost analysis study conducted by the University of Florida for the FBC. The committee discussed the new CILB proposed Residential Roofing License and voted unanimously against the license and plan to attend the CILB meetings to voice opposition of the license. The committee also reviewed the new FRSA-TRI 6th Edition of the Florida High Wind Concrete and Clay Roof Tile Manual presented by the Roof Tile Committee and voted to accept the proposed document.

Convention Committee – As of August 31, 2018, there were 165 exhibitors filling 317 booths as compared to 145 exhibitors filling 262 booths at the same time last year. 42 booths are currently needed to make budget. The committee reviewed 2018 surveys, sports tournaments, and social functions, adjusting as needed to further build upon the success of the 2018 event. The 2019 Convention & Expo will take place July 17-19 at the Gaylord Palms Resort & Convention Center, in Kissimmee.

Educational & Research Foundation – The committee reviewed financial statements and discussed ways to reach out to the industry for contributions to the Endowment. They also reviewed the Foundation scholarship application and will post it on the website immediately, giving those applying a longer time to gather necessary information. The committee reviewed seminar suggestions for the fall and spring, and discussed tentative seminars for the convention, which will be decided upon by year end.

Executive Committee – The committee reviewed the August 31, 2018 Association and Services Corp Financial Statements and investments and discussed the Proposed 2018-2019 Budget once more before presentation to the Board of Directors. A parcel of land for sale near the current Association offices was discussed in detail and the committee recommended that the Board authorize purchasing the property if the right deal can be made. A waiver on job site ladders drafted by Trent Cotney was approved for posting to the FRSA website. Also approved was a recommendation that the Board allocate $100,000 from current year profits toward FRSA’s 100th Anniversary celebration in 2022. The FRSA Young Professionals Council was discussed, as was the format for the 2019 Convention S.T.A.R. Awards dinner. Future convention dates were also reviewed and have been secured through 2026.

Governmental Affairs – The meeting began with a review of the committee’s Strategic Plan Goals and an FRSA PAC financial report, after which Legislative Counsel Cam Fentriss delivered a report covering workers’ compensation, Assignment of Benefits and open/expired permits. The bulk of the report covered the current issue of a CILB proposed Residential Roofing License, which FRSA strongly opposes. Fentriss also presented her 2018 campaign contribution recommendations which were approved by the committee.

Ladies of FRSA – The committee discussed plans for the Ladies’ Program during the 2019 Convention, which will include a healthy mind, body and spirit class and a dessert skills workshop. The plans for the Kids’ Program, including an off-site day at Andretti Indoor Karting & Games, a Mad Science presentation, and a Pool Party, were also chosen. Plans to raise funds for the 2019 Charity of Choice, Our Daily Bread of Bradenton, were discussed, and plans were set for a lottery themed basket which will be donated to the Silent Auction.

Membership Committee – The committee discussed additional ways to promote FRSA on social media and community blogs. They would like to create a survey, polling members for reasons why they joined or for their favorite benefit, and to promote those to nonmembers. They stressed that FRSA needs to focus more on promoting what we do for the industry.

Roof Tile Committee – The committee reviewed the final version of the FRSA-TRI 6th Edition of the roof tile manual, which was presented as a result of a joint committee rewrite. Final tweaks were made to the manual, which was approved and forwarded to the Codes Committee for approval. They also reviewed a code mod for the reuse of salvaged tile and discussed self-adhered (Peel & Stick) underlayments and anchor sheets.

Worker Training Subcommittee – The committee reviewed notes and comments from the Roundtable Discussion held earlier this year and decided that at this time, FRSA would not purchase a mobile trailer, but instead focus on developing training program. The committee is in the final phase of revising the Certified Roofing Technician (CRT) Program, a basic training program for new employees. Other plans include developing on-boarding courses, and promoting NRCA’s ProCertification Program.

Young Professionals Council – Discussion took place on developing a video to help members train their crews, possibly creating commercials, keeping technology on the forefront for FRSA and other committees, and to raise $2,000 for the Charity of Choice or the PAC during the 2018-2019 year. Note: The Young Professionals exceeded their $2,000 goal that same day by raising $2,300 for the PAC during a cornhole tournament and raffle. Great job!!
