Originally built in 1941 and last renovated in 2006, Holt High School is the oldest facility in the Tuscaloosa County School System. In 2014, the Tuscaloosa County Board of Education approved a new Holt High facility as a priority for its capital projects through 2019. The new building, which is scheduled to be completed at the start of 2019, covers more than 114,000 square feet and will hold more than 500 students. Through an open bid process, Freeman Sheet Metal, also located in Tuscaloosa, secured the roofing portion of the project.
“This was a very unique project for us to work on from start to finish,” said Matthew Pugh, vice president of Freeman Sheet Metal. “The building was designed with six distinct roofing levels and called for metal wall panels along large portions of the top perimeter of the building.”
Freeman Sheet Metal utilized Duro-Guard ISO insulation with tapered elements over the metal deck, and mechanically fastened approximately 97,000 square feet of Duro-Tuff membrane over top. Along the terminations they selected EXCEPTIONAL Metals 2-Piece Snap-On Compression and 2” vinyl-coated drip edge, as well as LX-style gutters and downspouts to provide adequate drainage. For the wall panels, the Freeman Sheet Metal team installed approximately 35,000 square feet of EXCEPTIONAL Metals LokSeam panels.
“Weather was our biggest obstacle throughout this entire project,” said Matthew. “During the months of December through February we got over 15 inches of rain, above and beyond what we normally get during this time of the year. The rain ended up pushing the overall project off schedule and we were completing portions of our work out of sequence from what was originally planned because we had to get work done when the weather allowed.”
With an average rooftop crew of 10 for the membrane installation, they were able to complete the roofing system in approximately five months. Wall panels were installed in conjunction with the roofing system, and required a separate crew, averaging 15 people, which took roughly seven months to complete. “There was a lot of weight on that rooftop from time to time, but we were all able to work efficiently for our portions of the project,” Matthew explained.
Once work on the roofing system was complete, the school system was provided with a Duro-Last 20-Year NDL Warranty, ensuring students and faculty have superior protection for years to come. “The administration is excited to have a product that is backed by the manufacturer and has a proven history of long-term performance,” said Matthew. “With the limited resources that schools are working with these days, knowing that the roofing system on their new building was provided through a single source and will stand the test of time has provided them great peace of mind.”
