Don’t Fight the Spec: Find Compliant Solutions for Your Roof Edge

Metal-Era Risky Business
October 13, 2023 at 3:00 p.m.

By Dani Sheehan.

Disregarding code and cutting corners is risky business. But compliance doesn’t have to be difficult or expensive when you choose the right manufacturer.

Testing for edge systems on low-slope roofs is required in every state. By disregarding this testing or code compliance for your area, you risk the reputation of your business, but more importantly, you risk the safety of the building’s occupants. Understanding the importance of a roof’s edge as part of the building envelope is critical for maintaining the durability and cost-effectiveness of a project.

What is often overlooked is that the roof edge is the first line of defense against wind in the building envelope. And even though it only costs about one percent of the overall project cost to ensure it is installed correctly, inadequate roof edges account for up to 59% of reported system failures. Metal-Era and Hickman can help make ES-1 compliance even easier. Their Edge Systems One fascia and coping are economical and easy to install. They are thoroughly tested and the perfect fit for any weather condition.

Want to learn more about ANSI/SPRI/FM 4435/ES-1 code and compliance? Metal-Era offers continuing education programs to contractors, architects and consultants in the industry to help them expand their knowledge and complete any necessary education credits for the year. They offer a Perimeter Edge Metal Wind Design seminar to dive into building code and the importance of edge metal. You’ll learn why ES-1 code is necessary, the proper testing methods and how to calculate wind design pressure in compliance with code requirements. Available in person or virtually, attendees will earn one American Institute of Architects (AIA) Health, Safety and Welfare (HSW) learning unit and one International Institute of Building Enclosure Consultants (IIBEC) continuing education hour.

Schedule a wind seminar now to learn more about protecting roof systems against failure and reducing your own risk.
