Dale Nelson Receives Very Prestigious Award

Roof Hugger Dale Nelson
June 20, 2019 at 6:00 p.m.

RoofHugger president and co-founder is honored with the Metal Construction Hall of Fame award!

Last month Roof Hugger said that big news was coming down the pike about their President and Co-founder Dale Nelson. Dale has recently been named a recipient of the very prestigious Metal Construction Hall of Fame Award.

This is very well deserved as Dale has spent almost 50 years in the construction industry with most of that in metal buildings, roofing and of course retrofit of existing building roofs. Dale has also held some very impressive positions in the Metal Construction Association (MCA) and the Metal Building Manufacturers Association (MBMA) which shows his relentless efforts to improve and grow metal in construction. In addition, he continues to hold a contractor's license in Florida.

"It is important for the metal construction industry to continue to grow and be competitive as a building product," Dale said to Metal Construction News." And, given the recyclability of the material we use, metal certainly has the best potential to be one of the primary construction materials in every project. It’s got a great story to tell."

Dale also joins his late co-founder D.V. "Red" McConnohie, a 2015 recipient of the Award. You can read the full story about how the two met and the start of Roof Hugger at Metal Construction News. To summarize, Dale's first job after graduating college was with Red's construction company, a job that he thought would be temporary until he found one related to his major of business and finance.

While reroofing one of Red's investment properties, Dale was using the traditional method of using hat channels when Red stopped by and halted the work. Saying it wasn't the best way, the two came up with a notched Z design that they had fabricated. It worked perfectly and thus was the beginning of Roof Hugger.

The Metal Construction Hall of Fame Award, founded in 2012, recognizes each year those individuals who have had a significant impact on the metal construction industry through their innovation, effort and leadership. Nominees are judged in five categories:

  1. Longevity: Honorees must have been actively involved in the industry for at least 15 years.
  2. Unique Contribution: The creation or development of a specific aspect or segment of business that has advanced the industry.
  3. Body of Work: The depth and breadth of contribution to the industry throughout a career.
  4. Legacy: The honoree's contribution must have had a long-lasting impact on the industry.
  5. Integrity: Honorees must exhibit the highest ethical and professional standards in all aspects of business.

The Judges represent the four organizations that are partners in the Hall of Fame:

  • Metal Building Manufacturers Association
  • Metal Construction Association
  • Metal Building Contractors and Erectors Association (MBCEA)
  • Modern Trade Communications

Inductees are nominated in one of three categories

  • Manufacturer/Supplier
  • Contractor/Installer
  • Friend of the Industry

Congratulations Dale from all of us!
