In Season 3, Episode 44 of Roofing Road Trips, RCS President Heidi J. Ellsworth visits with Chuck Magee of Raise the Rank. They discuss everything search engine optimization (SEO) as well as Chuck’s steps to getting your company at the top of search engines. Chuck also shares the most important questions you should be asking yourself or an outside SEO company that will help your business climb to the top of Google’s list.
“What most people don't understand is that pure, hardcore SEO is about traffic. And, to get traffic, you've got to rank,” said Chuck.
Chuck began the podcast by comparing a company’s ranking on Google to a piece of real estate. One of the most important things that determines the value of property is location. For your company’s SEO, the first page of Google Search would be considered prime real estate. Google is, quite simply, how you get your company in front of your audience.
“It's critical to be there,” said Chuck. “Now, where you are [on Google] will change every time somebody searches a different keyword. And that's something that a lot of guys don't understand."
Raising your rank on Google is about a lot more than just your keywords. The process of implementing Google My Business (GMB) is not quick and easy, and Google is always changing its algorithms to keep companies honest. Because of this, a lot of contractors turn to SEO companies for additional assistance. Hiring an outside SEO expert for your company can be a fantastic option for increasing traffic on your website, but before you hire someone Chuck recommends asking them the following questions:
Where am I ranking?
What are my problems?
Why are these my problems?
What are you going to do to solve those problems and make my company rank better?
What is something I can do to raise my rank that I'm not doing now?
“If they can't explain what the problems are, and they can't explain a course of action to get you to number one, then you need to keep looking,” said Chuck. “Einstein that said, ‘If you can't explain it simply, then you don't understand it well enough’ and, a lot of times they will use acronyms that they picked up on, because they don't have a lot of experience and they can't get down to that technical level.”
There are a lot of pop-up SEO companies without the necessary experience to get you to the top ten spots on Google. However, Chuck reminds us that optimizing your business is a long-term game. Your company won’t appear on Google’s first page overnight, but with time and dedication you can dramatically increase your website’s traffic through paying careful attention to how you position your company online.
“The most important thing that any roofing company can do is work your Google My Business, your GMB,” said Chuck. “You might have equipment. You might have a fleet of 10 or 15 trucks. You might have thousands of dollars' worth of tools, and all kinds of things. But, the most important asset you own is your Google My Business. I can promise you that.”
