Championing new frontiers in sustainable coatings

Akzonobel Championing new frontiers in sustainable coatings
November 5, 2024 at 12:00 p.m.

By Jesse Sanchez.

Commitment to sustainability meets innovation in coil coatings.

In this episode of CoatingsCast, Heidi J. Ellsworth speaks with AkzoNobel experts Amanda Paterline and Tessa Slagter about the company’s strides toward a sustainable future in the coatings industry. With a focus on coil coatings, Amanda and Tessa share how AkzoNobel’s initiatives address the entire value chain, including transparency in environmental data, energy efficiency and reducing materials of concern — all with a keen eye on improving sustainability without sacrificing performance.

AkzoNobel is committed to creating data-driven solutions that lower carbon emissions. By providing product carbon footprint data, AkzoNobel ensures that clients have the information needed to make sustainable choices. “We at the moment do have the product carbon footprint data for all the materials that we supply, because you want to make sure of that transparency first and then you can know where to focus on,” Tessa notes. “I feel that is really the starting point, because you need to start sharing that data,” she expresses, pointing to the growing demand for transparent practices in coating manufacturing.

Amanda states that the industry is now able to make informed decisions for sustainable building, from selecting recyclable materials to leveraging advanced digital tools. These tools not only reduce production waste but also allow for greater customization and accuracy in coating applications. She adds, “There’s different color tools and QC tools to optimize your process as a coil coater or us as a coil manufacturer, to lean out the waste in that process. If you can cut down on that waste, that’s a great opportunity for cost savings for a company.”

In addition to these practical advances, AkzoNobel is looking to the future with its investments in e-beam curing technology, which Amanda believes will be pivotal in further reducing the environmental footprint of coil coatings. This technology, she explains, will allow for “a more energy-efficient cure and faster, so speeding the line time,” a crucial factor as regulations tighten around industrial energy consumption.
