Celebrating a year of Roofing is Women!

NWIR Celebrating a year of Roofing is Women!
August 19, 2024 at 12:00 p.m.

By Emma Peterson.

Learn how National Women in Roofing’s microsite is helping women enter and excel in the roofing industry!

In this episode of Roofing Road Trips®, Megan Ellsworth spoke to Shelby Smith about National Women in Roofing’s (NWIR) microsite, RoofingisWomen.org. This site aims to help women find, start and excel in roofing careers. This is an industry that is traditionally male dominated, but that is changing by the day. Shelby, who is the NWIR recruitment chair, shared a bit about how this microsite got started, saying, “It was last year that we got the site live, but didn't really start promoting it or advertising it straight away. Now, we also are going to launch a social media campaign.”

This microsite contains a variety of resources for women who are interested in, or even already a part of, the industry. One of the big focuses is connecting women to job opportunities. Shelby elaborated, “It's accessible. It's available. You don't have to log in. If you are a roofer and you're hiring, you can put that link on your job postings, and it'll bring women to the site.” And for those looking to answer those postings, the site has resume-building tips and different tools to help with the process!

In addition to the professional resources, the microsite creates spaces for community and support. Shelby explained, “It has stories of women who came from other industries into roofing, and just how they've grown and how their careers have flourished and the success that they've found. One of Shelby’s favorite spaces is the facilitated FAQ. This is a space on the microsite where women already in the industry share what they wished they had known prior to joining. Shelby explained, “The FAQ aims to address a lot of questions and concerns women might have. Like, ‘What if I don't want to get on a roof?’ Well, there's an answer to that question in there, and ‘I heard their salespeople are only commission. Is that true?’ There's an answer to that question in there.”
