Celebrating 25 Years of the Cool Roof Rating Council

The Cool Roof Rating Council will celebrate their 25th anniversary at their annual meeting this June in Vegas.  

In a recent episode of Roofing Road Trips, Heidi J. Ellsworth sat down with Rich Slomko and Jeffrey Steuben from the Cool Roof Rating Council (CRRC) to discuss the upcoming CRRC Annual Meeting on June 14, 2023 at The Cosmopolitan in Las Vegas, Nevada. The meeting will celebrate their leadership and progress over the last 25 years and the impact they’ve made on the industry.  

The Cool Roof Rating Council is an online database designed to help contractors and building owners identify various roofing products that comply with building codes and other ratings such as LEED or Green Globes standards. The database gives each product a rating based on their Solar Reflectance Index (SRI), which is indicative of its impact on the building’s energy use and the surrounding environment.  

Rich explained the original purpose of the organization and the work that they do. “CRRC was established in 1998 to address the urban heat island effect and the impact this effect has on energy use, pollution and human health. We do this through three ways: ratings, research and education.” He continued, “Early on, a key driver for the organization was giving independent, third-party ratings of the radiative properties of roofing products so that the state of California could rely on that for their compliance and enforcement with their building code, Title 24.6.”  

Since then, the Cool Roof Rating Council has been dedicated to providing accurate and important data to those in the industry looking for a reliable and dependable source. They hope to celebrate this accomplishment at the annual meeting in June with members and non-members who value timely, accurate and valuable information pertaining to reflective building materials.  

The CRRC invites members of the industry to attend the 2023 Annual Meeting and join them in celebrating 25 years of positive impact on the industry. The meeting on June 14 in Las Vegas will feature informative speakers and presentations. Registration is now open for those interested in attending.
