California State Building Receives Primer Makeover

Sika California Sate Building
September 15, 2023 at 12:00 p.m.

By Sika.

The State of California looked to Sika products to improve the energy efficiency and durability of their Redding state office building.

Project description

The State of California commissioned Scott Tyson in January 2020 for a review of a project for one of their buildings in Redding, California. It involved recoating an existing PVC single-ply roof system. After thorough review, the Sikalastic-500 Silicone Coating System was offered. It was accepted for its performance and because the Sikalastic 503 Primer is compatible with both horizontal and vertical grade formulations.

Project solution

The Sikalastic-500 system aggressively adhered to the existing single-ply PVC roofing system with the use of the Sikalastic-503 primer. Sika's horizontal field grade and flashing grade effectively addressed all existing conditions of the roof. The chosen color, white, also allowed for enhanced reflectivity and energy efficiency as a cool roof - bringing the client significant cost savings when compared to a complete re-roof of the facility. The building owner was very satisfied with the responsiveness of Sika's field reps and the overall outcome of the project as completed by Clark Roofing. We look forward to working more with the State of California in the future.

Product used

Sikalastic®-500 : Single component, ultra high solids, liquid applied silicone roof coating

  • VOC Compliant:  < 50 g/l VOC maximum in California.
  • UV resistant: Slows degradation caused by normal weathering, aging and ultraviolet rays
  • Reflective top coat: Can reduce cooling costs by reflecting UV rays. The high reflectivity also helps colors maintain their original appearance, whereas other roof coatings tend to fade and sun bleach at faster rates.
  • Waterproof with better ponding water resistance.*
  • Durability: Infrequent and low maintenance costs.
  • High tensile strength and abrasion resistance.

Project participants

Contractor: Clark Roofing - Sacramento, CA
