Finding skilled labor remains the number one challenge for roofing contractors. As the industry continues to grow, the demand for qualified professionals has never been higher. In this episode of Roofing Road Trips®, Heidi J. Ellsworth sat down with Tony and Kristin Case of Hi-Peak Staffing Solutions to discuss the critical role communication plays in recruitment success.
"Getting that job order and aligning expectations is the most important thing to me," said Kristin. "When we're working together, you're hiring us on to provide a service because I'm assuming you've exhausted your own resources and now, you're coming to a specialized source." Setting clear expectations from the beginning ensures that recruiters can present candidates who truly fit a company’s needs.
Tony echoed this sentiment, expressing that open communication determines whether a staffing partnership will be successful. He added, "We might not be the best recruitment agency for you. And we have to identify that immediately. If we can't communicate clearly and openly, we don't know if we can build that relationship." Building a relationship between recruiter and contractor is foundational to an efficient hiring process.
Another key takeaway from the discussion was the importance of adapting job descriptions in real time. "If we're presenting candidates that maybe are close, but they're not the exact thing that you're looking for, we need to understand that we need to update our search tactics," Tony explained. "We need to update who we're looking for; what we're trying to identify them as. And so, if we don't have that communication right away of, we like this about this candidate, we like that about that candidate, if we can merge these things together to find that perfect fit, that's what we're looking for." This flexibility is crucial in an industry where roles evolve based on market needs.
Kristin also highlighted the necessity of speed in the hiring process. "The momentum is exactly what we're looking for. We present someone, you say you love them, let's get in front of them, let's talk to them. We cannot wait two weeks or three weeks or four weeks to have that conversation either over the phone or in person or video conference, whatever that looks like," she stated. "If they don't hear anything, they feel like any human, that they've been ghosted." Candidates need reassurance throughout the hiring process and even small gestures of communication can prevent a business from losing top talent.
The Cases stressed that recruitment is not just about filling positions but creating long-term matches that benefit both employer and employee. "We want every party to be happy," Kristin noted. " I want our new company to be super excited about the candidates that they're seeing and I want the candidates to feel the same way."
