This beautifully designed museum on the Florida Panhandle is home to some rare and valuable exhibits of United States naval air history. The persistent leaks from outdated roofing not only threatened these rare treasures, but posed safety issues for visitors and staff.
The museum’s location in Pensacola is ideal for year-round outdoor exhibits and the regular bonus of a Blue Angels practice. But the Gulf’s high humidity, salt air and a hot sun are no friends of traditional roofing. Even the best EPDM single-ply sheets will dry, shrink, pull free and breakdown under intense ultraviolet and infrared punishment.
Continuing failure of roof repairs, and the constant appearance of ever more leaks, were already disrupting activities and increasing maintenance costs. Tearing off the roof, disposing of it and replacing the old problems threatened a cycle of escalating costs and headache.
A survey of the failing EPDM roof showed that the National Naval Aviation Museum was well-built, as well as well-designed. The ASTEC Authorized Contractor was able to restore the waterproof integrity of the existing roof. It was then used as a sound substrate for a sustainable, fluid-applied ASTEC® Re-Ply™ Cool Roof.
Installation savings: By avoiding expensive tear-off, disposal and replacement costs ASTEC® Re-Ply™ Roofing Systems for EPDM installed for half the cost in one third the time!
Cool roof/green building advantages: The ultra-high UV reflectivity and IR emissivity of their ASTEC® Re-Ply™ cool roof puts the museum at the forefront of energy efficiencies.
No business interruptions: No tear-off or replacement. No interruption of operations.
Tax flexibility: Along with green credits, by reclaiming their roof, rather than replacing it, the museum had the option of fully deducting the ASTEC® Re-Ply™ costs in the first year.
Monolithic, seamless surface: The museum’s advanced ASTEC® Re-Ply™ cool roof is as thick and durable as most traditional replacement materials, but without seams. Fluid- applied layers build smoothly up and around all curbs and penetrations making it wind and weather-tight, and virtually impervious to airborne salts and other contaminants.
Guaranteed sustainable: The ASTEC® Re-Ply™ RENEWABLE™ Warranty promises waterproof protection for both materials and labor. It assures that the National Naval Aviation Museum roof is sustainable by inspection and restoration to full spec — ready for a “renewed” warranty at each term — putting an end to “tear-off” and “disposal.”
Renewed for second term: In 2015, the museum opted to renew their warranty term with ASTEC. After a thorough onsite inspection/evaluation, an ASTEC certified applicator was able to clean, prep and reapply ASTEC protective finish products to extend the term of the warranty by another 10 years, all at a fraction of the cost of the original installation.
Feedback from museum management has been extremely positive. The museum’s Director of Operations shared, “Anytime maintenance demolition or construction threaten our exhibits, moving or protecting them adds peripheral costs to the budget. So does lost exhibit time and revenue. Finding ASTEC’s fluid-applied roofing proved to be a win-win for us.
