A journey of growth and leadership in the roofing industry

Johns manville A journey of growth and leadership in the roofing industry
October 6, 2024 at 3:00 a.m.

By Jesse Sanchez.

Geoff Mitchell’s journey in roofing reflects a story of growth, evolution and teamwork.

In this episode of Stories From the Roof, sponsored by Johns Manville, host Megan Ellsworth sat down with Geoff Mitchell, CEO of Mid-South Roof Systems, who shared the story of his 27-year career, from humble beginnings to leading a growing company. Starting his journey in roofing as a young man needing a "real job," Geoff’s entry into the field happened by chance, but his passion and dedication drove his success.

"I was 17 or 18 and I needed to get a real job," Geoff explained, recalling how he transitioned from the restaurant industry to roofing. He was introduced to Mid-South Roof Systems through a connection at his church and began working at the company when it was still a small operation of just 30 employees.

Geoff recounts the company's early days, which he referred to as "Mid-South Roof Systems 1.0," describing the business as entrepreneurial with few formal processes. He wore many hats, from project management to IT, helping the company grow and evolve. "It is definitely a team effort," Geoff noted, expressing the importance of collaboration in Mid-South’s expansion to over 200 employees.

The conversation covered the transformative "2.0" and "3.0" phases of Mid-South, as the company built processes, refined its organizational structure and focused on professional development. Mitchell credits much of his learning and the company's success to broader industry involvement, particularly through the National Roofing Contractors Association (NRCA). “There are so many different thumbprints of ways to do this,” he shared, stating the value of learning from others in the roofing industry.

Geoff’s story offers insights into leadership, growth and the value of constant improvement, but there's much more to uncover in the full episode. His experiences navigating Mid-South's evolution provide valuable lessons for both industry veterans and newcomers alike.
