Did you know? According to the U.S. Census Bureau, “The Hispanic population of the United States as of July 1, 2019 is 60.6 million, making people of Hispanic origin the nation’s largest ethnic or racial minority. Hispanics constituted 18.5% of the nation’s total population. Ten states have over 1 million Hispanic residents: Arizona, California, Colorado, Florida, Georgia, Illinois, New Jersey, New Mexico, New York & Texas. The United States has the second largest population of Hispanic people in the world, second only to Mexico.”
Hispanicheritagemonth.gov reports that, “Each year, Americans observe National Hispanic Heritage Month from September 15 to October 15, by celebrating the histories, cultures and contributions of American citizens whose ancestors came from Spain, Mexico, the Caribbean and Central and South America.
The observation started in 1968 as Hispanic Heritage Week under President Lyndon Johnson and later expanded by President Ronald Reagan in 1988 to cover a 30-day period starting on September 15 and ending on October 15. The month long celebration became law on August 17, 1988, on the approval of Public Law 100-402.”
September 15 signifies the anniversary of independence for Latin American countries, including Nicaragua, Honduras, Guatemala, El Salvador and Costa Rica. Mexico’s Independence Day is September 16 and Chile celebrates on September 18. Columbus Day, also known as Día de la Raza, falls during Hispanic Heritage Month and is celebrated October 12.
Besides the Hispanic Heritage Month website additional resources, including online events, can be found at the following locations:
