2021 Was a Big Year for This Non-profit Organization

IIBEC 2021 looking back

From memberships to education, IIBEC has gone above and beyond building a diverse organization that represents the best of the building enclosure industry! 

Throughout 2021, International Institute of Building Enclosure Consultants (IIBEC) was working hard to support its members through the pandemic, maintaining the highest professional and ethical standards while advancing the profession of building enclosure consultants. Read on for a highlight of the good that IIBEC accomplished in the past year, and celebrate IIBEC’s accomplishments as part of their commitment to the industry as a leading authority in building enclosure consulting.  

Value of IIBEC 

  • The National Institute of Building Sciences (NIBS) appointed IIBEC Chief Executive Officer and Executive Vice President Brian Pallasch as vice chair of the NIBS 2021–2022 Consultative Council. 
  • Christian Hamaker joined IIBEC as director of publications and communications.  
  • Emily Lorenz was appointed to the Commercial Energy Code Consensus Committee and will represent IIBEC members in developing the commercial provisions of the 2024 edition of the International Energy Conservation Code (IECC). 

Emerging professionals 

  • The IIBEC Education Committee and RCI-IIBEC Foundation collaborated on a virtual panel for college students, Launching a Career as a Building Enclosure Consultant. Total registration: 175.  
  • The RCI-IIBEC Foundations sponsored 23 students, including six students from Canada, at the International IIBEC Convention and Trade Show in Phoenix, Arizona.  
  • Took in $108,825 on Giving Tuesday for the newly renamed Joe Hale Student Sponsorship Fund, including a $50,000 gift for the RCI Foundation Canada from Atlas-Apex Roofing. 
  • The RCI-IIBEC Foundation awarded four Bob Lyons Scholarships of $5,000 each and four Lew Newlan Scholarships of $2,500 each. Since 2018, the foundations have awarded $120,000 in scholarships. 

Advocacy 

  • The IIBEC board approved a series of policy statements to educate IIBEC members and public officials about issues IIBEC believes are important.  
  • Hired John Boling as its first full-time government relations professional.  
  • Participated in multiple coalitions and industry groups to raise IIBEC's profile at the national level. 
  • Helped derail legislation in Oklahoma, Illinois and Indiana that would have negatively impacted the industry.  
  • Formed a task group to investigate the best approach to assist IIBEC members with a change to the scope of Factory Mutual (FM) Global Property Loss Prevention Data Sheet 1-52, Field Verification of Roof Wind Uplift Resistance.  
  • The Codes and Standards Committee developed six code-change proposals for the Group B cycle of the 2024 International Building Code and International Residential Code. The Technical Advisory Committee published two new technical advisories: Roof Covering Systems and New Concrete Decks and Rooftop Equipment Including Communication Equipment. 

Knowledge transfer 

  • Released a second edition of Roof Drainage, by Stephen Patterson and Madan Mehta. The new edition was funded by the RCI-IIBEC Foundation.  
  • Launched See What We’re Building This Week! — a weekly newsletter covering IIBEC events, educational offerings, government affairs efforts and member benefits.  
  • Published, Roof Decks A-Z, by Lyle Hogan, an IIBEC Interface collection. In 2021, IIBEC Interface featured 43 technical articles, eight of which were made available on The Hub (iibec.org/hub). 
  • Served 1425 people through IIBEC’s online learning platform.  
  • Held more than 10 webinars, two of which were in Spanish. 
  • Presented the Instructor Development Course at the 2021 IIBEC International Convention and Trade Show in Phoenix, Arizona. 
  • 2021 IIBEC International Convention and Trade Show, September 15–20, 2021, Phoenix Convention Center and Sheraton Phoenix Downtown. After working and socializing remotely for 18 months, IIBEC members and staff enjoyed reuniting to work, learn, socialize and network in-person at the 2021 IIBEC International Convention and Trade Show.  

Other gatherings in 2021 included:  

  • Virtual Spring Symposium - May 2021  
  • Virtual Region V Meeting - June 22–24  
  • Virtual Region II Meeting - July 20–22 

Chapters 

  • Maintained 27 chapters and nine branches across the United States, Canada and Mexico.  
  • Held a Leadership Development Workshop in-person in Raleigh (and virtually) November 4–5, 2021, with 23 of 27 chapters in attendance.  
  • Helped enhance chapters’ online presence through the IIBEC Virtual Toolbox. Integrated IIBEC chapter events into the IIBEC education calendar on IIBEC.org.  
  • Saw a record 22 chapters participate in the 2021 Outstanding Chapter Award program.  
  • The IIBEC Quebec Ontario chapter was officially recognized to serve the region surrounding Ottawa. 

Ethics 

  • Ran an Ethics column in four 2021 issues — January, April, July and October — of IIBEC Interface. 
  • Held IIBEC’s first ethics panel, Ethical Dilemmas: A Discussion Among IIBEC Members, at the 2021 IIBEC Virtual Spring Symposium. 
  • The RCI-IIBEC Foundations held their first hybrid auction both in person and online at the 2021 IIBEC Convention and Trade Show and raised over $46,000.
