Metal Roof Edge Installation is Critical to Protecting the Roof

Improper installation of metal roof edging is a leading cause of roof system failure during a wind or weather event.

By Metal Era

According to Factory Mutual Insurance Co., after a review of losses following a major wind event, approximately 60 percent of roof failures were due to the perimeter edge metal. More often than not, that failure is due to improper installation.

The metal roof edge that protects the roof includes the fascia, coping, drip edge and miters.  International Building Code laws require that the fascia and coping meet the ANSI SPRI ES-1 standard, but if not properly installed, they won’t be able to adequately protect the roof from wind uplift.

Follow these tips to help ensure the proper installation.

  1. Be sure the roof edge has been tested and is up to standard.
  2. The metal gauge of cleat and cover are critical factors to successful installation.
  3. Overlapping cleats or using spacers can minimize the damage from thermal movement.
  4. Pre-punched and slotted fastener holes can accommodate thermal movement and reduce risk of damage.
  5. Use the correct fasteners with adequate pullout resistance.
  6. Welded or quicklocked miter systems are a more durable wind resistant solution for inside and outside miter corners.
