I just got a call from a lady that thought she heard something on her roof last night. She was doing yardwork this afternoon when she looked at her roof and saw the copper flashing around her chimney had been stripped off. She had chain downspouts and they were taken as well. Still all told, the salvage value is probably less than $30. Climbing on a roof in the dark on Saturday night risking getting busted for $30 (minus gas and time to take it in)>>>

About six years ago we did the oldest building in downtown Orlando. All copper gutter and downspouts which was piled in the parking lot until the owners could take it to the salvage yard and cash it in. Low and behold, the next morning over half of it was gone. Building owners were really PO'd but the building is right downtown and the homeless frequent this area all hours of the day and night. Since it was a locked area we thought it was safe to leave it there.

Drive through the bad area of town and you will house after house with the aluminum siding stripped off from the ground up about 7'.

We installed copper gutters and spouts in a historical landmark village in the burgh. This place is a small community of townhomes that are closely watched. Two weeks after installation we got a call that the spouts had been stolen.

Too bad you can't just electrify them.>>>

Downspouts are the low-hanging fruit.>>>

If only they would use their powers for good instead of evil.

I know, it baffles me too, how much time and energy a thief will extol to get away with something, but won't get a regular job that would pay much more.

Once, when I was doing a roof on a new White Castle Restaurant in Chicago, (Yeah, the dark brown and black side),overnight they broke into the restaurant and skinned off the aluminum surfacing on the kitchen wall panels that make them fire resistant. They had to work their Azzes off to skin that because they were solidly glued onto the backing material.

It makes you wonder what the Hell they are thinking. :S
