I am seeing more and more solar panels going up. As yet, I have not been on a roof that has solar panels.
How are these panels flashed? Are they just screwing the brackets directly to the roof like all of these dish mounts? I can't imagine that they are properly installing a mount. If they are, do they just screw them directly to weak OSB decking?
There is a range of options available now that avoid lagging directly to deck.
The best systems use stand-off mounts conforming to a careful layout.
The mounts are secured to framing members and after the roofing is installed,
complete with a flashing for each mount, channels are locked onto the mounts and
the panels are locked onto the channels.
On a tear-off, we dry in and snap lines on the rafters for the solar guys. Then we
oversee their stand-off placement to make sure they don't get everybody in trouble.
It all works out pretty well, actually.
