What "rule of thumb" formula should be used to calculate how many feet of starter shingle and H&R shingle is required based upon the total number of squares to be installed?

I heard there is a "formula" the old-timers used...something like Total Squares x 33/8 = how many feet of stater is needed.  Anybody else heard of this?

There is none. You use the measurements that you took to figure out the squares.
