Issue: During a routine roof installation project inspection, the Benchmark Field Consultant discovered improper and inadequate hot air welding of single-ply membrane laps; otherwise known as cold welds.

According to Benchmark

Solution: All lap seams were tested for integrity by means of destructive field test method. Failed lap seams were covered with a membrane strip, and hot air welded in place, as required.

Impact: Poor hot air seam welds, or cold welds, within the membrane lap seams can result in water intrusion into the roof system, leaks into the building’s interior, and potential damage to roof system components, and ultimately premature roof failure.
