Never been a fan of it. I was a member 30 years ago and found out that you can be the worst roofer in the state and still maintain a good rating, so long as you respond to complaints. You don't have to satisfy the complainant, just respond.
I joined the BBB again last year because a customer asked if we're members. First time in decades that anyone asked. We have an A+ rating, and did virtually nothing to earn it.
I only have it because a minority of customers thinks it's important and serves a purpose - I don't.
Your thoughts?
Extortion/ransom....that's about right!
Noticed a BBB search result, in a nearby city, depicting our company as having a "disconnected phone" and "this company is not accredited by the BBB".
Just sent them an email requesting they remove the erroneous info and coincidentally, we ARE indeed accredited BBB.
We had maintenance/storage shop/yard there years ago in which we cancelled/closed the phone number account long ago.
They'll try any angle.....
I "repair" what BBB member companies with A plus ratings "fixed" every day!
BTW, the BBB lists me at A+.
Hey, Roofguy! Please Edit your post and clear up my typo's! Aaargggh! I hate them and didn't proof read this morning.  Cops are like that around here. I was in a prohibited area yesterday and when I came out, a cop was parked beside my truck. I got my weapon out and reholstered it and he just nodded 'Good day' to me.
The client is a recent widow and I'm sure she was targetted. The guy claimed her husband often hired him. I'll probably be giving statements to the PD and court testimony about his 'workmanship', etc.
I haven't used them in many years. Funny thing happened this week. I was two weeks late getting to one client. A con artist hit her the day before I arrived. Botched her roof, stole her money, etc. Anyway, I'm trying to comfort her when her daughter shows up. She started in on me and who I was, etc. I said G was her friend, along with referrals. She said that wasn't good enough. I finally pulled out my wallet and handed her my Utah CCW permit and asked if she had any idea what I had to go through to get that??? B)
She looked at it for a few moments, turned to her mother and said "He's OK!" :) Turned to me and said she had one too. :)
I'm right there with ya on this one Roofguy......I pretty-much ran with the herd years ago.....NRCA, local chapter roofing associations, home bldr assoc's, chambers, the whole typical bit.....
I recently, (grudgingly), joined a BBB purely for the unwary consumers out there. Some of them do hold stock in BBB & the like membership....I did have one client recently tell me that they got our name through the BBB.....Who would've thought?
I ran a full service roofing company for 12 years. Joined the BBB upon opening and maintained an A plus rating the whole way. Ultimately that business became unprofitable and I had the corporation dissolved. Had an A plus rating upon closing as well. In my area it was helpful to be a member in order to get leads and close full replacement sales.
As most of you know, I started a new business as a "repair specialist" which I've ran for the last few years. I did not join the BBB this time and I've found that with the repair business it is totally unnecessary.
I've had only a couple of clients ask if I was a member. Upon me saying no I'm not because even storm chasers and companies that use illegals have an A plus rating with their system, the clients just said "Oh, I see, where do I sign?" ;)
Same. You can pay for performance.
Also, like any rating system can be skewed. We had a local business get us a B rating about 10 years ago because they said we didn't pay a $300 bill, where we had the cashed check to prove it. They complained, BBB got monet.
I got a BEYOND ODD post card from some corporation talking about how it was a huge scam. This was about 3-4 years ago.
