Young roofers head to Austria to showcase their skills!

NRCA Young roofers head to Austria to showcase their skills!
October 28, 2024 at 12:00 p.m.

By Dani Sheehan.

The IFD World Championship is an international event for young professionals to demonstrate their competencies in a variety of disciplines and highlight the importance of skills and talents in the building envelope.

It’s no secret that the roofing industry is facing a skilled labor shortage. As experienced workers retire, fewer young people are entering the trades. But just as the Olympics spotlight the endurance and skill of the best athletes worldwide, the International Federation of the Roofing Trade (IFD)  have been showcasing the talent and dedication of young roofers for 72 years. Every two years the IFD hosts a World Championship of Young Roofers, where young professionals from around the world gather to demonstrate their expertise in a competitive environment. This year, for the first time, the United States will proudly send a team to compete on the global stage.

The World Championship not only celebrates craftsmanship but also promotes the importance of vocational education and the quality of trade training. Competitors are challenged in various disciplines, including facade, flat roof, pitched roof and metal roof categories. Each team consists of two roofers representing their country, and participants are guided by mentors who offer valuable expertise and experience as they prepare for the event.

In each category, teams will be evaluated based on a range of rigorous criteria, including:

  • Accuracy of execution
  • Performance
  • Cleanliness
  • Utilization of materials
  • Craftsmanship
  • Implementation of the required task
  • Serviceability

The National Roofing Contractors Association (NRCA) has played a key role in supporting the U.S. team, providing crucial resources and guidance as they prepare for this competition. Team USA is comprised of three competition teams, each assigned to a separate discipline. Those disciplines are low-slope thermoplastic, metal panels and pitched slate and tile. This moment is not only a milestone for the U.S. roofing community but also an opportunity to elevate the trade by promoting the development of young talent, ultimately contributing to a more sustainable built environment.

Want to follow along and cheer for the U.S. team? RoofersCoffeeShop® will be providing live updates from Austria throughout the event on YouTube and social media. Don’t forget to subscribe so you don’t miss out! Tune in November 13-15, 2024, to witness this incredible showcase of skill and craftsmanship as the United States takes its place on the world stage!
