In a recent episode of Coffee Conversations, sponsored by ABC Supply, Heidi J. Ellsworth speaks with Deborah Mazol from the National Roofing Contractors Association (NRCA), and Charles Antis and Jesus Zermano from Antis Roofing & Waterproofing. Not only do they all have years of experience in the roofing industry, but they are also all Roofing Day alumni!
Since 2018, the NRCA has been hosting Roofing Day in D.C. to allow members of the roofing industry a chance to discuss the issues that matter most to them with members of Congress. The event was created by the NRCA’s former CEO Reid Ribble, who was also a former congressman, as a way for the industry to make their voices heard at Capitol Hill.
“That first year we had about 400 participants, which made it one of the largest fly-ins on Capitol Hill,” Deborah said. “So, if you can imagine as a staffer going down to grab your coffee, you see this sea of red or sea of roofers with lapel pins and it really starts to get abuzz.”
Charles described an experience he had at one Roofing Day where he got to speak with former U.S. Representative Mimi Walters and saw firsthand what showing up for this industry looked like. “There was about 30 other people in the district that showed up. We had 30 roofing people in that meeting. And in that meeting, what happened was we all introduced ourselves,” he said. “And in that moment there was a pause because she saw the face of the workers that did the work, and it felt different when she heard it.”
Jesus shared with us his experience at the same Roofing Day in which he got to speak with U.S. Representative Lou Correa. “He asked me, ‘What do you need? Well, what you guys doing here?’ And I said, ‘We are looking for immigration reform and more help for our district and for all our people, the roofing industry’” he said. “So he says, ‘Go ahead, you guys try to do whatever you can and I'm going to support you guys wherever I can.’"
