Waterproofing for Tile Assemblies Made Easy

Polyglass Waterproofing for Tile Assemblies
July 7, 2021 at 10:00 a.m.

By Michelle Miller, RCS Writer.

Install peace of mind with the Polyglass Polystick® waterproofing underlayment systems.

When working with a homeowner for a tile roof quote, one question must be answered above all else: why? There are a few reasons why a homeowner could be requesting a tile roof installation. For new construction, a tile roof may be specified for aesthetic reasons. For reroof projects, the homeowner may simply be looking to replace their existing tile roof. Fundamentally, tile roofs were designed to provide the homeowner with the highest level of weather protection. While the tile design is certainly important, the waterproofing provides an equal if not higher level of protection from the elements, including high temperatures, high winds and high moisture.

As you discuss options with the homeowner for tile, be sure to mention the importance of what’s underneath the tile. Installing high-performance tile on a bad underlayment is like building a house on a cracked foundation. The underlayment must provide watertight protection, withstand extreme weather conditions, and of course, meet code requirements.

The Polystick® self-adhered underlayment is manufactured with ADESO®, which is a patented, dual-compound, self-adhesive technology. Manufactured by Polyglass U.S.A., Polystick underlayment systems are reinforced with a high-strength fiberglass mat. The top consists of a high-temperature, weather surface, and an aggressive adhesive compound on the bottom.

Polystick is available for both foam or screw tile installed roofs (TU Plus and TU Max), and the MTS Plus is designed to withstand high temperature environments. For contractors working with Florida homeowners, Polystick is the only two-layer system available in the Florida market, and carries Miami-Dade County, ASTM D 1970 and D 5147, Florida Building Code, and ICC ESR-1697 approvals. It’s also UL Classified for use in class A&B roofs.

While Polystick provides plenty of long-term benefits for the homeowner, there are several advantages for you and your crews as well. Polystick is a self-sealing membrane, sealing around fasteners for a consistent, secure installation. Additional exclusive protection is provided through patented SEALLap® technology, which is a factory-applied adhesive at membrane side laps. Installation is clean and fast.

Be sure to mention to your homeowner that Polystick may help reduce insurance premiums, is independently tested and approved, and is backed by an extended 30-year warranty. Currently protecting over four billion square feet of dried in homes, Polystick provides watertight protection, long-term performance and ultimately, peace of mind for you and the homeowner.
