In this special video case study of Contractor Success Stories brought to you by Estimating Edge; RoofersCoffeeShop® and Estimating Edge invite Danny Boyle from Hargrove Roofing to discuss what is working in technology and with roofing companies.
Danny was a project manager for several different companies using estimation software for both project management and take off. In his current role at Hargrove, he does project management and estimation for the Houston office.
His advice to estimators when it comes to software is to invest time in the front end. “With the Edge the way that you do that is by developing those systems and conditions, building a material library and investing that time into plugging those numbers in from the front end,” Danny says. “To have a kind of baseline so you can do accurate takeoffs is extremely useful.”
“Investing time in the software to develop those proper systems makes it easy when you come back on the back end, estimates go a lot more quickly, accurately and smoothly,” says Danny. “In this day and age if you're not doing takeoffs digitally then you're going to waste so much time trying to do that manually.”
Danny also contributes the success of Hargrove to how easily his team has been able to communicate in the Edge. “For us, being able to really keep up with the market and have that cross-platform communication — being able to collaborate with our team members in Louisiana — that's huge, that's everything,” Danny says. “We're constantly communicating back and forth and then making real time adjustments within the Edge and within our CRM.”
When looking for an estimation software, a huge factor for Danny is customer service. “We have a Technical Support line and then we have a customer service email that we're able to communicate with and get responses really quickly. I feel like we've really received that within the Edge which is great,” says Danny. “Technical Support has really helped us effectively make changes if we don't know what we're doing with the new software”
Training with the new software is critical for success and it is important that it remains accessible and easy. “Being able to have the online portals to be able to look at the videos and get updates whenever you get a new version of your software has been invaluable," says Danny.
Ultimately, Danny tells us that the key to success in the estimation business lies in your ability to keep up with current conditions and the market, and keeping up with the current software and what your competitors are using is critical to your ability to do that.
"As the market continues to grow here in Houston, and as we're developing our office, we're going to get more and more bids. We may add some more estimators, and in that case being able to collaborate with me is an indispensable tool. We would not be successful without having that.”
