U.S. Navy Veteran Celebrates 71st Birthday With New Roof

RCS Veteran 71st Birthday
June 26, 2021 at 3:00 p.m.

By Cass Jacoby, RCS Reporter.

Willie Brown III was gifted a $12,000 roof, and peace of mind, for his Gallatin home just in time.

Willie Brown III turned 71 on April 26, days after a successful roof install. Willie's roof was installed by My Roofing Crew, in partnership with Habitat for Humanity of Sumner County and Owens Corning Roof Deployment Project, and just in the nick of time.

Willie applied to the Owens Corning Roof Deployment Project, a nationwide effort that gives back to U.S. military veterans, for assistance on February 24. By then, his roof was already in dire need of repair.

Owens Corning and Habitat for Humanity approved Willie's request. He was scheduled to receive his new roof in less than two months. However, in those two months, severe hail, tornados, heavy rains and unexpected snowfall had deteriorated his old roof considerably.

A practicing musician, Willie worked hard to protect his instruments from the leaky roof, covering them in plastic and catching water in buckets. "I had about 13 buckets inside, and my ceiling was falling," Willie told the Nashville Tennessean. "It was a nightmare."

Despite the weather setbacks and the influx of repair jobs from the storms, My Roofing Crew remained determined to deliver Willie his roof on schedule, considering the job a priority.

My Roofing Crew replaced decking on a roof section where the leaks were coming from and installed a new $12,000 roof for free. Despite Willie's music room sustaining minor flooding, nothing was damaged by the rain. The project only took six hours to complete.

"We didn't have any hiccups at all with the install, and it couldn't have gone better," said My Roofing Crew Director of Marketing Liz Garza. "We always welcome helping veterans. It's the honor of a lifetime to be able to give back in this way."

For Willie, this is a birthday to remember. "I'm content, I'm blessed and I got peace of mind, finally," Willie told the Nashville Tennessean. "When they came out here, I could hardly hold back my tears. They came to my rescue. The roof is holding up fantastic. I couldn't have asked for any[thing] better."
