Asphalt has been a cornerstone of human innovation since the dawn of civilization. While its use in paving roads and roofing is widely recognized, asphalt's versatility extends far beyond these common application. This material's unique properties have allowed it to adapt to various needs throughout history, offering solutions that might surprise many today.
The practical use of asphalt dates to the new stone age or roughly the beginning of settled human history. The useful properties of this naturally occurring material are abundant. As a sealant, water proofer, building mortar and adhesive, asphalt has served humanity for centuries. Today, most people are familiar with the use of asphalt in paving and roofing, but just as it was centuries ago, there are many perhaps lesser-known uses for this adaptable material.
This newsletter series will focus on some of the more unique usages. These topics will include the history of using asphalt for waterproofing plant liners and how that has morphed into vegetative roofing today. As well as the use of asphaltic products for sound proofing, insulation, shower pan installation and others.
We hope you enjoy the series – if you think of other applications, we would love to hear about your experiences with this true wonder of mother earth. If we highlight your submission in our series, you could win a gift card!
